Girl Fight!

The kids began arriving while Lacie was in the break room, disposing of their cocoa cups. That all went over pretty well. She was smiling to herself and in a good mood as she started to walk out of the kitchenette. The sounds of an argument stopped her cold.

She watched as Nelda and Whitney went head-to-head in an argument over something she’d come into the middle of. One look at Clevon’s face as he tried to get between them and say something told her all she needed to know. She rushed toward them, but she wasn’t the only one. Will and Sofia converged on the whole group of kids, too. Sofia started directing the little ones away as Will put his body squarely between the two young women.

“If you’re going to get physical,” he cautioned them, “you’re going to have to get through me.”

Clevon tried to step forward, but Will told him, “Back off. I’ve got this.” He looked from one teen girl to the other. “Let’s all calm down. Both of you, take a couple of steps back, give each other some breathing room.”

The girls hesitated at first, but with the much larger Will continuing to glower at them, they gave in and did as they were told.

Lacie motioned Clevon to her. When the boy moved in her direction, she guided him to the kitchenette, saying, “Let’s talk in here.”

He followed, skulking behind her.

She didn’t mince word with him. “I know you know what that was all about. They’re arguing over you, aren’t they?”

He gave her a half shrug. “I dunno. I guess so. I didn’t start nothin’ between them.”

“I’m not blaming you.” She met his eyes, “But I do want to ask you, do you have feelings for either of them?” As if I don’t really know the answer.

“Me and Whitney have been going out a little bit… a couple of times.”

Okay, not the answer I was expecting.

“And Nelda?”

He shook his head. “She’s my neighbor, two doors down. I’ve been knowing her for forever.”

“Ever go out with her?”

“No, no. She’s too young… just turned 13 last month, I think, or the month before. And, anyway, she’s a year behind me in school. We just… we hang out sometimes. My gramma and hers are friends.” He trailed off with that statement and let out a small sigh.

Something else is wrong. “What are you worried about?” When he didn’t answer, she prodded him again. “What’s really on your mind?”

“Nothin.’ I’m fine.”

“It’s not nothing if it’s bothering you. You’ve got two beautiful young women fighting over you, to state the obvious, and you’re in here all moon-faced instead of out there strutting around like a banty rooster.”

“My gramma says that… that banty rooster thing.”

“Did she grow up on a farm like I did?”

He shrugged again.

“Anyway,” Lacie said, “back to the subject; what’s up?”

Clevon gave in. “DeMarco wasn’t in school today. I think him and his mom may have been evicted after all. I mean, we seem like we fight and all, but we’re friends.
