Mindfulness

Bringing your mind back to the present moment is so powerful. Using the breathing exercises in this book will help you to find your inner calm.

It’s easy to wish away each stage, willing your baby to reach the next milestone, so taking a mindful pause will help to soak up the magical moment you are sharing with your baby.

Hearing your baby cry can make you instinctively feel stressed, and your natural response is to want to soothe them. Kit had terrible silent reflux as a baby and there were days when the relentless noise of his cry became so unbearable I would feel myself becoming tense, frustrated and upset that I couldn’t seem to do anything to comfort him. During these moments it helped to consciously stop for a mindful breath and to physically release the tension in my body. I found it helpful to drop my shoulders, and relax the tension around my eyes and jaw.

There are many exercises in this book that you can practise to support you through these challenging moments, such as Calm begins with me (see page 53) and One-minute mindfulness (see page 29). Perspective in motherhood (see page 197) and WAIT (see page 68) might also be useful.
