Chapter 15

‘What is she trying to do?’ the doctor asked, racing into the room in response to his emergency page. He surveyed his patient quickly, trying to ascertain her status.

‘I don’t know,’ the nurse told him. ‘She just keeps saying it. She goes into the vision and then the electrical current cuts in. As soon as it stops and she does it again.’

‘She’s going to kill herself.’

‘Possibly.’

‘Or at least she’s going to cause some permanent damage,’ the doctor said.

‘I am aware of that, Dr. Fournier, that’s why I called you.’

‘Sara,’ he said, shaking her roughly by the shoulders. ‘Sara do you hear me? You’re going to damage yourself. You need to stop doing this.’

‘I can’t,’ Sara said, before another electrical shock took her breath away.

‘What are you trying to see, what are you trying to discover?’ he asked. ‘Maybe I can tell you what you need to know.’

‘You would never tell me the truth,’ she gasped. ‘I can’t trust anything you would say.’

‘Try me. Please, dear girl, you can’t just keep doing this to yourself.’

‘You can’t stop me,’ she cried. ‘I wonder what happened.’

She screamed as more electrical current burned into her arm. The doctor dropped her back onto the bed.

‘Sedate her,’ he ordered.

‘Are you sure?’ the nurse asked. ‘We don’t know how it will interact with everything else we’ve put in her system over the last couple of days.’

‘Do it,’ he repeated. ‘Keep her sedated until I can figure out how to get her under control.’

‘Yes sir,’ the nurse acquiesced. He filled a syringe and walked over to the bed, injecting it into the IV that was set up now in Sara’s arm. ‘You don’t know what you’re doing to yourself, girl.’

The two men stood and watched her. She fought the drugs, trying to stay conscious and in control.

‘Just relax,’ Fournier told her.

‘No,’ she mumbled. ‘No, just let me go.’

‘Just relax and don’t fight it,’ he soothed her. ‘You can’t win, dear, you can’t win.’

Finally her eyes closed and her body relaxed. Fournier quickly checked her vital signs and then wrote some notes in the chart at the foot of her bed.

‘I don’t want her awake again until we’re ready,’ he instructed the nurse. ‘Do you understand?’

‘Yes doctor.’

And then he stormed out of the room. The nurse took a cloth and gently wiped the sweat off Sara’s forehead before settling down at her bedside with his novel. Outside her door, Dr. Fournier pulled out his cell phone and dialed a number.

‘Beckman Pharmaceuticals,’ a pleasant voice said.

‘Dr. Beckman please. Dr. Yves Fournier returning his call.’

‘One moment doctor and I’ll connect you.’

After a couple of minutes of seventies pop music blasting in his ear, the call was finally answered.

‘Well,’ the gruff voice barked at him.

‘It worked, Andrew.’

‘It did?’

‘She’s the most amazing subject I’ve seen. She can have visions at the drop of the hat and her vitals are rock steady. It’s amazing to see after witnessing all the others.’

‘We really did it?’ Beckman asked. ‘She’s really stable?’

‘She’s brilliant, Andrew. Ben Douglas was right all along about the ages of the subjects,’ he said.
