CHAPTER EIGHT

Hannah got busier as the day of the benefit drew closer. Two house sales closed, and she saw her clients through getting their keys and stepping foot in their new homes. Showings dropped off a bit in the lead up to the holiday, as most people were in Christmas mode and rushing around to do their shopping and decorating. But Hannah hadn’t yet put up her tree, nor had she wrapped the presents she’d bought for family. And the day-long event was taking a significant amount of her time. Christmas was a busy time for Oaklee, too, as the town held several events and promotions, and as social media manager, Oaklee was scheduled to the hilt. Hannah didn’t feel she could add anything more to Oaklee’s plate.

But she still made time for her morning run, though the last few days she’d been running solo. Right now, she was back to her original route, her feet slapping the sidewalk in a steady rhythm as her breath made puffs of air around her face. Her early runs were the one thing that always seemed to keep her sane. Whether it was the endorphins or the deep breathing or what, exercise kept Hannah from being overwhelmed.

She missed running with Cam, though. She hadn’t talked to him since she’d driven him home, and she suspected he was skipping the runs due to his recurring symptoms.

She’d wanted to call him or text him, but maybe the one night was all he was after, and truthfully, she wasn’t sure more was a good idea. She was in danger of liking him too much. For the first time in a long time, she felt as if she could be herself with someone. Cam had no reason to feel threatened by her “big personality,” as her brother, Ethan, put it. The morning after he’d stayed the night, they’d talked a long time about why she loved real estate, why she found business so invigorating, and she’d even let him in on the secret that she was a silent partner in a few ventures around town, Willow’s yoga studio included. He’d shared with her, too, about what it was like to be a professional athlete, the pressure, the competitiveness, the fame. They were a pair of overachievers who didn’t have to compete with each other. It was just too bad they lived on opposite sides of the country. Maybe they might have explored this thing between them a little further. See where it led.

When she got home, there was a text on her phone from him, asking her to meet him for lunch at the Sugarbush Diner. She knew she should say no. What was the point in prolonging something that had a definite shelf life? And yet she found herself typing back yes for twelve thirty. She wanted to see him. To know how he was doing, and if he was feeling better.

Besides, the diner had the best Cobb salad in Vermont. She’d been indulging in a little too much comfort food lately.
