9 An Unjust Recompense

Rain drummed against the window of the bedchamber; Elizabeth lay listening to its music. Then she remembered and came fully awake. This was not Chalfort House. She was in Bath at Lady Russell’s house on Rivers Street. She pulled the pillow over her head.

But it was fatal to lie here. If sleep did not return, memories would, and memories of her trip to Richmond were dangerous. Elizabeth got up, found her dressing gown, and padded across the room to her open trunk. There was work to be done.

There were letters to be written to her hostess, to Miss Bingley, and to Mr. Rushworth and his mother. The sooner these were posted, the better. All would be variations on the same theme:
