Two days later Izzy passed Chad in the hallway of the ER unit. The notes of “Penny Lane” never failed to come across his lips. Izzy grinned. That tingly feeling he always created in her appeared. She shouldn’t be so giddy about the personal attention he showed her, but she couldn’t help but like it.

They hadn’t seen each other except at work since their trip to Nashville. It was just as well. She needed some distance from him. Needed time to sort her feelings. Izzy wasn’t sure there would ever be enough time for her to figure those out. She went between accepting the feelings that were growing in her and convincing herself she should stay as far away from him as possible. The problem was she lived in his backyard and worked with him. That wouldn’t be easy.

Recently her saving grace had been they were on different shifts until today. Even now the ER had been so busy they hadn’t had a chance to talk to each other. She’d deny it if asked but she missed him.

Izzy walked up to the unit desk. The unit tech said, “Dr. McCain has a fall patient coming into trauma one. You want to help him out?”

She couldn’t say no. They made a great team in an emergency. “I’m on my way.”

Izzy entered the room. The patient had just arrived. The EMTs were still giving Chad the report.

The girl had a four-by-four bandage lying over the right side of her forehead.

“Hi, I’m Izzy, one of the nurses. What’s your name?”

“Judy.”

“Judy, may I take a look at your injury?” Izzy smiled.

The girl nodded.

A two-inch laceration marred her young face. A red line of dried blood went over her eye and down her cheek.

“Can you tell me what happened?” Izzy asked.

Chad joined them then.

“I hit the street curb hard,” the girl said.

Izzy said, “This is Dr. McCain. He’s going to take care of you. He’s nice and you’ll like him.”

Chad’s look met hers for a second. His eyes twinkled.

“Judy, can you tell me what happened?”

“I was walking along. I just fell.” She sounded perplexed.

Izzy looked to Chad. “I’ll get her vitals.”

Chad said to Judy, “I’m going to need to check your eyes. I’m afraid you might have a concussion.” He pulled down on her bottom eyelid.

“I don’t want to be here,” Judy groaned.

Izzy spoke close to her ear. “I hate to say it but I’m afraid you’re gonna have to stay. You need stitches and you need to be watched for a while. You took a hard hit to the head.”

Chad spoke to Judy. “Can you follow my finger?” He moved his finger back and forth in front of her face. “What made you fall?”

“I don’t know,” the girl muttered.

“She just went down.” A man who stood in the corner responded, adding, “I’m Judy’s dad.”

Chad asked Judy, “Does anything hurt? Other than your head.”

“It was hurting before I fell.”

Izzy’s gaze met Chad’s. That didn’t sound good.

He nodded. Chad asked his next question in an unemotional voice, but Izzy recognized a note of concern.
