Bully

I have the sudden, unmistakable sensation of being naked, shamed, laughed at. I want to cover myself up. My body has just begun to change, and I don’t recognize it, it’s not for anybody’s eyes, this isn’t right, it’s not fair, not funny—

I imagine myself running. Pushing past rocks and feathers and crystals in this overpacked store, bumping into the Buddha fountain and sloshing water onto the floor, bursting out into the parking lot, thinking, absurdly, of the gardener and how it was his instinct to sprint away from me the other night.

You don’t know a fucking thing.

I don’t realize I actually have run out until I turn around to see the outside of the crystal and herb shop, and then the world begins to gray. The sudden exertion has made me very dizzy. I’ve been holding my breath too long.

The last thing I see is the front door opening and Anna-Louise, as flowy as a wraith, coming out of her shop, shouting over her shoulder, “Momma! She’s dropping!”

Then the pavement rushes up to greet me, and I—
