“Rep. elect Mary T. Norton of N.J., 12/4/24.” Mary Norton, pictured here inside the U.S. Capitol building on December 4, 1924, was elected the previous month to the U.S. House of Representatives from the Twelfth District in New Jersey and served urban, Roman Catholic, working-class constituents from Bayonne and part of Jersey City for 13 consecutive terms from 1925 to 1951. She was the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress from the Democratic Party, the northeastern states, and an urban district east of the Mississippi River.
