Downstairs in the second living room, Iris had convinced the various guests to wait while she phoned the police.
“Question,” said Luis. “Why should I be obligated to stay here?”
“Because you live here?” said Melanie, incredulous. “And because a woman just died.”
“At this point anyone who tries to leave the house is going to attract suspicion,” said Geneva, entering from the third room. “If you’re a smart person, you won’t want to risk that.”
“That’s an open question,” Steve muttered.
Luis looked vaguely annoyed. “Is it a crime to ask questions? I wasn’t planning on going anywhere. I just want to know why we’re obligated to stay and be questioned by these ladies.”
“The police are already on their way,” said Iris. “They’ll be wanting statements from each of you, and we’ll of course be sharing what we know. Again, I’m not treating anyone as guilty until we’ve gotten a thorough look at the facts.”
“I’d prefer if you don’t think us guilty at all,” said Steve, somehow making himself look bigger than he was. “As an American citizen, I have a right to a fair trial.”
“Which you will have—if necessary,” said Geneva. “It’s routine for private investigators to assist in questioning suspects. If you try to resist questioning, that’s going to raise a whole new set of questions. Speaking of which, where’s Nanette?”
Nanette had slipped away while Iris had been on the phone with the police.
“Was she not in the kitchen?” asked Iris with some alarm. “I want her right here where I can see her.”
“And that raises another point,” said Geneva. “We would prefer that everyone stay together while we’re conducting the interviews, probably in one of the upstairs rooms. Someone has just been brutally murdered. The killer could be very dangerous and is likely somewhere in this house. He might even be one of you.”
“It could be a woman murderer, you know,” said Luis. “Where’s Melanie?”
“She’s with Holly,” said Iris. “She’s trying to explain, very gently, what happened to her grandmother.”
The mention of Holly reminded Geneva of something she had nearly forgotten about. “I saw some random kid wandering through the house earlier, on an iPad. We need to find him and get him home.”
Luis balked at this. “Why not question him? He’s as likely to have done it as any of us.”
“A twelve-year-old boy, Luis?” said Jared. “Really?”
“I’m not eliminating any suspects,” said Luis pompously.
Geneva motioned for calm. “We’ll question him, but I don’t know if we’ll be able to glean much. He might have seen something he wasn’t even aware that he saw—like that poor girl in Agatha Christie’s Hallowe’en Party.”
“Is that where you got your training?” asked Steve. “Reading Agatha Christie novels?”
“Doesn’t hurt,” said Geneva. “Anyway, I think we can rule him out as a suspect—and also Holly. This murder was committed by a strong man or woman, someone who could strangle a woman. There’s no evidence of a struggle, which means death must have been fairly quick. If the killer had been weak, Leandra would have resisted. We might have heard screams.
