Chapter Sixteen

Luke

I’ve never been an anxious person, but ever since my parents dropped by unannounced on Friday evening and interrupted our romantic and very intimate after-dinner dance, my anxiety has been high.

I’d expected a phone call or even a text message from Mom yesterday, but my phone has been silent. I even thought maybe she’d come by the bar while I worked to talk about what happened.

But no. It was just me and our staff.

None of my siblings bothered to stop by to check on me, either. They all know how things went down with Mom and Dad on Friday. I expected something from at least one of them.

It was my turn to work a Saturday shift and close up the place. After Dexter and Chelsea were married, we started rotating the Saturday shifts with our manager. We each only work one Saturday a month. I’d often choose to come in and work more shifts than that. It wasn’t like I had anyone waiting for me at home. At least, not until now.

So yesterday was my Saturday, and it was eerily quiet for my nosy, meddling family.

Even now, as we’re getting ready for Sunday dinner at my parent’s house, my phone remains silent. No messages from Heath telling me how irresponsible I am. No grumpy texts from Dexter telling me not to screw it up. And no messages from Emily lecturing on how wrong it was that I did such a drastic thing without telling anyone.

My siblings are never quiet when one of us makes a life altering decision. Or as they probably see it—screw up like I did.

I run my comb through my beard and trim a few of the long hairs I missed when I groomed it earlier. Once I’m happy with how it looks, I gather my hair in a low bun and twist a hair tie around it. Even though Nicole likes it better down, it’s bugging me today.

Everything is bugging me today. My clothes feel scratchy. My breakfast isn’t sitting right in my stomach. The ring on my finger feels foreign for the first time since sliding it into place. The low rumble of voices downstairs is grating on my nerves. And everything smells like Nicole, and it’s making me fucking horny. Getting a whiff of her sweet vanilla scent is like tempting a kid with an open cookie jar. And one bite is never enough.

Normally, that would make me happy, but being horny is the last thing I need right now.

I’m sure my parents would love it if I showed up for Sunday dinner with a rock-hard dick.

I’m already on the shit list. I don’t need to make it worse.

“Uncle Lu ... I mean, Daddy. Mommy sent me up here to ask if you’re ready to go.” Brianna comes barreling into the room with a huge grin on her face. Her smile eases some of my anxiety I’m feeling. So does the fact that she called me Daddy. I don’t care what the girls call me so long as they let me in their lives, but I love how Daddy sounds coming from Brianna.
