His memories of the scent from her last letter were still vivid, and so he raised the paper to his nostrils and took in a deep breath. This time there was a strong hint of cinnamon and vanilla. The scent reminded him of the smells in Maggieâs little bakery. He wondered what she had been doing before she wrote to him, and lost himself in a daydream of her making dainty delights, that would melt on the tongue and leave just a memory of perfection lingering. He was so glad that she would be making the journey â was more than happy that she had taken up the challenge. He did not want her to feel beholden to him; he did not want to be her refuge. He wanted to be her partner, her lover, her friend. He wanted her to come to him because she wanted to, not because she felt she had no choice, and he prayed that this would be the start of something wonderful for them both.
Now his crops were planted, things on the farm were a little calmer. He was always busy and there were always a thousand things to be done, but nothing was urgent as he waited for the little green shoots to emerge from the soil, grow healthy and strong, and ripen into a bountiful harvest. So, he used his time wisely, splitting it between the chores he had to do on the farm, and making sure his home was fit to be visited. Alice would live in town when she arrived; she and Ellen would take the tiny apartment above the bakery. But, he wanted his home to be the kind of place a wife would be proud to call her own. He wanted to make a good impression, and so he asked Maggie and Catherine to give him advice. Catherine had only recently refurbished the saloon, and she was full of very useful ideas that he could implement without much money.
When they had completed their task his cabin looked like a home. It was no longer just the place he laid his head, and left in disarray. It would make a wonderful place to bring up children, and was a pleasure to live in. He wondered why he hadnât paid any attention to it previously. Like so many men, he had only cared that there was a bed to sleep in, and a chair to rest by the fire. Anything more than that had seemed unnecessary, but now he had drapes and armoires, a neat kitchen with everything in its place and he couldnât have been happier. He took pride in folding his things and putting them away carefully, rather than simply leaving them strewn across the floor.
The day of Aliceâs arrival finally dawned, and he hitched up his horse to the wagon and made his way towards Sun River. The train was due at midday in Great Falls, and he was determined to be there early. He stopped outside the little bakery on the High Street, and Maggie leapt up on the dashboard beside him.
