CHAPTER 17

Scarlett

I drag myself to the kitchen and yawn. Even after getting eight hours of sleep, I’m still tired. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Maybe it’s the fact that I can’t stop thinking about Alessandro almost every second that I spend awake.

I need to quit my job and get as far away from him as possible, but I still have no idea how to do it. I’m afraid he’ll figure out I know something I shouldn’t, but it’s not only that. It’s totally stupid, but I’m already sure I’m going to miss him.

I pour myself a cup of coffee. A frown creases my brow as I bring the cup to my lips. Eww! I slam the cup back on the counter.

“What’s wrong?” Mia appears in the doorway, a surprised look on her face.

“The coffee. It stinks. It must’ve gone bad or something.” I don’t know what it is, but I don’t want to smell it again or I’m going to be sick.

“Can coffee go bad?” Mia snatches the cup and eyes it carefully. “Mom made it not too long ago. She was drinking it.”

“I don’t know. Maybe something fell in.”

Mia narrows her eyes and lifts the cup to her nose. Her gaze meets mine a moment later.

“Um, it smells fine to me,” she says. “Like always. Even better, actually.”

“Ha ha. That’s not funny. Just throw it away. I’ll make—”

Mia takes a sip before I can finish my sentence, and I stare at her in horror. No way! How can she drink that without retching or spitting it out? It smells like something died in it.

“It’s perfectly fine.” She gives me a quizzical look that makes me think I’m going crazy. “See?”

She shoves the cup under my nose. As soon as I catch a whiff of it, I think I’m going to throw up, so I back away from her and the cup.

“What’s wrong with you?” Mia tilts her head and takes another sip.

“I don’t know. I guess it’s Alessandro. Thinking about him is messing with my head.” I sigh.

It looks like I can’t even enjoy my morning coffee because of him. That’s totally unfair.

“You could’ve told him you quit a billion times already! Why didn’t you?” Mia scowls. “He could be out of your life. It’s super easy. All you have to do is tell him. Or whoever else is in charge.”

“I told you already. It’s not that simple.”

“Yes, it is. Just don’t go to work today. Don’t show up. Or come really, really late and mess up everything you have to do.” Her eyes widen. “Oh! I got a better idea. Find some hot guy who works there and sleep with him! Make sure everyone knows about it. Alessandro will fire you himself, or the company will because it’ll be a scandal or whatever. Nothing will happen to the guy, of course. Never does. And you’re new, so—”

“Mia!” I shake my head at her. “Stop with your insane ideas! I’ll go today, and I’ll tell him that I quit.
