The house was silent. Not even a bird lighted on the roof. There were no sounds from downstairs, no clack, clack from the typewriter, no music from the radio or voices from the television. There were no footsteps. The humans were gone.

The doll on the bottom step of the attic stairs raised its head. The door stood open. Freedom lay beyond. It rose to its feet and leaped down from the step into the hallway.

Above, in the attic, the murmurs began, softly, whispering like faint night breezes. The toy animals, the dolls, began moving, gathering beneath the light at the head of the stairs. The murmurs became chatters, and as they sensed more fully that the humans had gone and given them access to a wider world by opening the door that had enclosed them in the attic, the chatters grew to squeals and chirps and deep-throated grunts of approval. The stronger among them began going down the steps. The weaker lingered behind, waiting, watching, measuring with their sensibilities the depth of each step down, the height of each step back up when the need would come to return. The sounds of their success rose, as their voices reached out from one to the other.
