Maebe sat in the dark of the damp room. Too awake to sleep, too tired to sleep. The vision of her mother giving birth had played over and over in her head, it was so vivid she swore she could have smelt the newborn in the air. Seeing the tiny faces of herself and Theo was both poetic and surreal all wrapped up in a blanket of impossibility. Who was the hooded man? He wasnât the man who placed her here. Was he an ancestor? Perhaps part of the same cult? She didnât know. Only that they wore similar garb and kept their faces very well hidden. The man who took the babies stood without resistance. He offered no rhyme nor reason to her mother. Only that she knew what she was doing, Mae assumed he meant when she conceived the twins.
The sound of his hand landing across her motherâs face would be a sound that lived within her for a lifetime. Seeing her motherâs body land heavily against the wall was hard. Even knowing it was a vision, she wanted to doubt its authenticity but couldnât.
The way he scooped up both the babies, saying he would return the one he didnât want. What did he mean âdidnât wantâ? Both herself and Theo had grown up in what she thought was a normal childhood. Maeâs mind was sitting in a small boat, on the edge of a whirlpool of questions. Threatening to pull her down into the abyss only to drown her with confusion and untold secrets.
It was a tapping on the bars that made her eyes look up. There he was, standing on the edge, an eagle.
âWynter?â she whispered.
The eagle responded with an extended stretch of his wings. Looking directly at her, he held her gaze before pulling his wings back neatly against his body once more.
âOh, Wynter, I am so pleased to see you.â The tears immediately brimmed on her lashes as they threatened to tumble down the curves of her cheeks.
The eagle jumped down from the window, landing on the cold stoned floor. He lumbered awkwardly from side to side, making his way across the ground to the door, the sound of his talons scratching on the stone breaking the silence. He walked through the bars. Maebe watched him trek up the corridor for a few minutes before returning to her room. It was only then,
