Chapter Thirteen

Kallen

After driving to the restaurant and meeting with the valet, who Gabe also handsomely tipped, Gabe got into his car, which was a high-end BMW, and I followed him to Garden Heights.

I was familiar with the area. I dealt with a lot of customers there. It didn’t surprise me that one of them was not Gabe. I had a clientele of larger men, most of them alphas.

As we drove past the mansions, I recognized some that I’d been in. All were ostentatious with far more rooms than they could use and perfect for large social gatherings. I couldn’t believe Gabe lived in one all alone. It seemed almost sad if not for his privileged circumstances. I myself preferred a house I could make into a sort of nest—a home. Omegas loved making nests, but maybe Gabe didn’t. I wanted to make sure he knew he could do as he pleased; I never wanted to get in the way of his routines. But it was still difficult for me to picture myself living here. In some ways, the area felt too quiet, almost cold. But with Gabe, anywhere would be home to me.

Was it too early to start thinking of living together? We’d already declared ourselves mates. But that didn’t mean we had to rush anything. And sometimes mates didn’t work out, for whatever reason. We had a bond; I felt like I’d known him for years. But we still had a relationship to build.

The streets wound through beautiful, low-hanging trees on the roadside, framed by wide sidewalks. Tiny white flowers scattered through the air as I passed under some of the trees. It was like Disneyland, everything pristine, the gardens and yards landscaped to perfection, fancy with curlicue trellises and archways, some with big gates and ivy-covered walls.

Ahead of me, Gabe put his turn signal on, then pulled into a short drive. A huge, wrought-iron gate automatically swung over. There was a pole by the gate with a call box, and a guardhouse just inside, but it was empty.

We drove a little further and Gabe’s estate appeared before me, a sea of rolling, grass covered hills, hundreds of trees, and flower beds all along the brick drive. His house sat in the center of it all, looking like a veritable castle with a round tower to one side.

A two-story, its size came from its sprawl. The garage itself, off to the right, had four doors. My whole house might have been slightly larger. His house had dark walls and white trim. If not for the size, it looked like a toy I’d once had that came with a fantasy playset.

Instead of driving toward the garage, Gabe pulled up to the wide steps leading to a grand front porch. I followed.

He got out of his car and walked toward mine, hands out. As I opened my door, I heard him say, “Well, here it is. Almost embarrassing, right?”

Was he embarrassed because of me?

“Not at all.” I stood, turning my body around in a circle to get the full effect.
