Luke heard her but didnât know what to say. He stared at the countryside. Swallowing hard, he wondered what to tell her. He couldnât tell her he knew David was dead, because heâd helped bury him. There was no way the man was David. His head began to ache, and he closed his eyes. He had a sinking feeling it was really David. Meg knew what he looked like. If he hadnât helped to bury David, then who?
He wanted to throw up. The most likely person was the girl who was in the grave he thought theyâd buried David in. He never checked to see who he was burying. His father was the key. Maybe David left after he found the body and used him to help him get rid of the evidence.
âWhere is David staying?â He gazed at her pretty profile wishing he hadnât brought all this on her.
âWith us, of course. I canât wait until you see him. Iâm so excited. I bet Timbers doesnât keep him long. He might be home before dinner.â She turned and smiled. âYou donât look so good.â
âI guess being at the police station didnât agree with me.â
âOf, course.â She turned into the drive and parked near the house. âIf you want to take a nap, itâs fine with me.â
Nodding he gave her a small smile. His heart ached. He loved her, but he couldnât have her. Not now, not ever.
They got out of the truck and walked to the house. Meg grabbed his hand and held on to it. It felt so right, but he knew it to be wrong. âA nap sounds good, Iâm beat.â
âSure, you go on. Iâll figure out whatâs for dinner.â
The concern in her voice crushed him. He didnât deserve her. Without a word, he went to his room and closed the door. He took a deep breath and stood in front of the window. The only thing he knew for certain was he wasnât the killer. If he came clean, theyâd blame the whole of it on him, and heâd never see the light of day again.
The door opened, but he didnât turn around. He heard her walk toward him. She snaked her arm around his waist and pressed herself against his back. âI believe in you, Luke.â Her voice was low and husky.
His body reacted to her nearness, and a shudder went through him. Turning, he crushed her to him, holding her tight. He let go and cupped her face in his hands. Her blue eyes held promises of a future, and he told himself to walk away but he couldnât. âI love you with everything inside me.â
Her eyes teared. âI love you too, Luke. Now is the time for us to lean on each other. Please donât push me away.â
He knew heâd go to the devil, but he couldnât help it. He lowered his head and claimed her mouth.
Her cherry lips were so soft under his, and he groaned. Maybe he should stop, but maybe this was all heâd ever have.
