Chapter 13
âBecky, have you seen that amethyst broach I wore to church last week? I was sure I left it on my shawl,â Polly Esther called up the stairs of the boarding house.
âDid you put it in your jewelry box?â
âI donât think so. I just thought it would look nice with my lavender dress.â Polly shook her head, turning back toward the kitchen where delicious smells drifted from the cook stove. âI donât know what I was thinking, inviting that Farrow woman and her daughter to dinner tonight,â she continued, hearing Rebecca Brady making her way down the hall.
âYou were being kind, Polly,â Becky said, her soft blue eyes full of understanding.
âI just thought she must be lonely,â Polly agreed. âSheâs had quite a change in her life and even with working at the Mill, I donât think sheâs made any real friends.â
Rebecca smiled. âIt will be nice having a table full of folks,â she teased, understanding that Polly missed her family when the boarding house was slow.
âMaybe we should have invited Maud and Harlan as well,â Polly mused.
âIâm sure they have enough to do right now, getting ready for a double wedding.â
âPolly!â Georgeâs voice echoed through the back door before it had even been opened, âPolly!â He called again, stepping into the room.
âWhat is it, George?â Polly turned a wooden spoon in her hand, a hint of worry around her eyes.
âWeâre having compâny,â George said. âSorry to spring it on ya like this, but it just sortaâ happened.â
Pollyâs brows furrowed. âYou mean Mrs. Farrow and her daughter?â
âNo, Willem Druthers with his niece and nephew,â George replied, his heavy gray brows rising toward his hair line.
âDruthers? But I invited Mrs. Farrow,â Polly said.
âWhat can I do to help?â George asked. âIt ainât like youâll need more food, is it?â
Polly scowled at her husband, then smiled as he wrapped an arm around her waist and kissed her on the cheek.
âIâm sure there will be plenty,â Becky chimed, in suppressing a laugh. âEven with me and Grady, weâve got enough to feed an army.â
âDid Mr. Meeks say heâd be joining us tonight as well?â George asked. âI can run over to the Mill and get an extra pie, if you need me to.â
Polly Esther Olson swatted George affectionately with her spoon. âYou just want to see what Rupert has new to try, George Olson,â she grumbled. âBut since you invited those youngsters, youâd better go fetch an extra dessert.â She smiled, shooing him away.
âIâll be back in a jiffy,â George said, looking to see that Rebecca wasnât around as he swatted at Pollyâs skirt and dashed out the door before she could yelp.
***
âMother stop griping. You accepted the invitation and Tate was kind enough to give us the evening off. With the diggers gone, evenings are a little slower, so it will be nice to get out and meet some of the neighbors in a more casual setting.â
âLucinda, I do not intend to waste what remains of my life in this backwater town, so I see no real need to mingle with the locals.
