chapter eight

SATURDAY

Storrs, Connecticut

Ellie shared a close and unique relationship with each of her grandchildren. Because Steve and Jordan were so close in age, their bond had always resembled that of siblings rather than cousins. Their words could cut like knives when they argued, but their bond remained unbreakable. Ellie couldn’t help but feel grateful that both were eager to share their lives and hearts with her. She looked forward to introducing Jean to Steve. He asked if he could invite his girlfriend to spend the day with them. Ellie gave her standard response, “The more, the merrier.” She gripped Jean’s hand when Steve walked toward them, hand in hand with a young woman with red hair.

“Hey, Gram!”

Ellie accepted a hug from her grandson.

Steve smiled at Jean and held out his hand. “Hi,” he said. “You must be Dr. Hay. Jordan talks about you constantly.”

“I’m afraid to ask what she says,” Jean said as she accepted his hand. “And it’s just Jean.”

“It’s all good,” he promised. He smiled and turned to the woman beside him. “This is Kelsey,” he said. “Kelsey, this is my Gram and her—”

Ellie chuckled at her grandson’s verbal stumbling.

“I hope I’m not intruding,” Kelsey said.

“Not at all,” Ellie said. “It seems fair to me. If I’m going to bombard my grandson with my girlfriend, he should do the same.”

Jean laughed. “Girlfriend, huh?”

Ellie shrugged. “It seemed better than the alternatives.”

Steve sniggered and looked at Kelsey. “I told you. Gram is the best.”

“So, what is on our agenda?” Ellie asked. “And please tell me it involves something other than pizza.”

“There’s a farm not far from here that has hayrides, a pumpkin patch, and a gift shop. And there’s a vineyard close by. They have live music and food trucks this weekend. Kelsey thought that might be fun,” Steve said.

“It sounds like a perfect New England day,” Jean said. She opened the car door for Ellie just as Steve opened the back door for Kelsey. “Wine and food trucks?” she whispered to Ellie. “You taught him well.”

Ellie winked. “I do what I can.”
