So my nighttime cuddling has progressed. I was suitably alarmed to find my hand groping Ellieâs boob this morning. I snatched my hand away so fast it made her jump out of her skin. To cover up the fact that I had been playing with her nipple in my sleep, I lied and said there was a bug that I batted away, hence the sudden movement. I didnât stick around to see if she bought my bullshit. Instead, I made myself very busy getting us breakfast.
Now we have been walking for five and a half hours with a couple of ten-minute rests in between. We will have to go through the whole process of picking a place to camp for the night and building a suitable shelter. I think we could get a couple more hours under our belt before we do that, though.
The majority of our hike has been in companionable silence. Honestly, thereâs so much to take in around here. Iâm grateful we gave each other the chance to do so. The last time I was here was for training. Let me tell you, there isnât much time for sightseeing in the Marines. As the time marches past, Iâm becoming more and more interested in learning about Ellie. There are definitely two sides to this woman. Iâm guessing that few people get to see the side I have glimpsed recently. Well, here goes nothing!
âSo,â I begin, turning slightly so she knows Iâm talking to her. âWhatâs it really like being you?â
âBeing me?â she parrots, looking confused at my question.
âYeah, being you. I mean Iâm sure itâs a lot of parties and glamorous events. But Iâm guessing itâs not all rainbows and butterflies.â
âWhy are you asking?â I can see the paranoia shooting off her like a laser. Wow, she really doesnât trust anyone.
âIâm genuinely interested. Look, we both admitted that when we first met, we were both actingâ¦well, not being ourselves.â Her demeanor is telling me to back off. âSorry, never mind, you donât have to answer.â I turn away from her again and concentrate on the path ahead. A few beats go by, and then I hear her suck in a breath. Is she going to speak?
âI never wanted to be an actress,â she says quietly. I stay silent, hoping sheâs going to continue. âMy first love was a mutt named Arnold. He was our cookâs dog. Iâm sure you know I grew up rich, even before the acting.â
âYeah, Iâve read your IMDB.â I grin over my shoulder.
âHa, right? So you know my motherâs side of the family is old money. Anyway, I really wanted to be a vet.â
âReally, a vet?â
âYup. Not what you expected, right?â
Her tone is light, which Iâm glad for. âVery surprising. So do you have a bunch of pets in your Hollywood mansion?â
âNo.â
âOkay. So why didnât you go to vet school?â
âMy mother felt it wasnât suitable.â
âBut acting was?â
âYes, she was the one who got me my first audition. Money opens doors, donât you know?â
âDo you not like what you do?â
She blows out a breath in frustration.
