Chapter Eight

When I search her eyes, I see that Nikki’s death has affected her more than what I thought it would. Not that she’s not sad, she is. It makes her think more about life and what she can do with it besides working to prove a point. Life can be gone in a blink of any eye and she doesn’t want that. I can’t say that I blame her, but if she were to leave today, she would have a heavy heart. She didn’t get to do what she wanted, always holding a grudge. I can understand that.

“Whatever you want to do I am here for you. I plan on going back to work full-time after all of this and I’ll update Lexi just like I told her I would.” I whisper to her.

“Thank you, you’ve done so much in helping me. I don’t know what to say.” She shakes her head back and forth.

“There’s nothing to say, that’s what people do when they love someone.” I whisper to her, biting down on my lip.

She gives me a surprised look and I didn’t mean for the words to come out like that. I didn’t. I wasn’t even sure the words were going to come out. I’m just as surprised as she is.

“You mean that?” She asks me.

I nod my head.

“We’ve only just started getting to know each other, but you’ve been here for me already so much. Anyone else would’ve thought this was just too much for them. My parents, my sister, all of this.” She looks up at the ceiling of the basement.

“I’m not like everyone else. I can’t say that I like everything about you. I don’t like how cold, you are, but that’s because of your past. I didn’t’ know that you had a cold bone in your body until we came here last night. It surprised me, but I understand it too.” I explain to her.

Kevin calls to us and we rush up the stairs. Leaving the conversation for another time. I am glad that he’s called to us, because I don’t know where the conversation would’ve led us.

The letter that Nikki had written is on the table and I watch as Andi glances at it but doesn’t touch it.

She walks right by it.

“Andi.” I call out her name.

“Come on, let’s get this done.” She clears her throat.

Her voice is strong now, I think that she takes after her father for that. When something horrible happens, she does her best to stay controlled until she’s by herself or around someone she trusts.

I look at Kevin and I see him shrug his shoulder slightly. I’m not going to get any help from him. He may be the man of the house, but he goes with the flow as much as he can I notice.

We bring the nightstand downstairs, we bring her rug, her dresser and the rest out of the room just to bring it to the basement.

By the time that we’re done its lunch time
