MANNY CAST THE rod with immediate results. Sylvia was the perfect bait.

They were set up in a van across the street, conducting surveillance. “Check this out,” John said. Already his tongue was hanging.

Manny didn’t need to tell CI No. 9 how to dress to get the job done. It was summertime, and she wore the sheerest, skimpiest layer from shoulder to thigh, her legs even longer in three-inch heels.

“You’ve seen her before,” said Manny.

“Sure, but not like this. Lisandru should get the leash. I wouldn’t let her out of the house looking like that.”

“What’s in that huge shoulder bag you think? More than just lipstick.”

“We can guess. Or I can find out.” John had taken the bait.

With all the ingredients of his plan in place, Manny decided to go all out. He started working double shifts seven days a week, one with John, one with the CI.

He liked to laugh about it with Sprague and Gunderson, whenever John wasn’t around. “I should’ve been a talent scout,” he liked to say. “I’d really make a killing.” Sylvia’s acting abilities were awe inspiring. The scar helped, and the full, trembling lips and incandescent eyes that picked up the rays in street lights. She had a way of tossing her black hair, proud one moment, vulnerable and moist-eyed the next.

Were the tears fake or real? Manny didn’t doubt that Sylvia needed to be rid of the Corsican. She had her reasons, and Manny had his own.

After their first sighting of Sylvia, John called the shots. He assigned himself the job of following her whenever she appeared on the scene, alone.

“You need backup?” Manny would ask, giving himself an internal wink.

“Nah, I got this one,” John said. “She’s mine.”

Manny would wait five minutes before stepping out of the van, knowing where to find them. He could have waited until daylight to get the CI’s report, but it was foolish to trust her completely. He watched from a distance, reading their body language, unable to hear what they were saying. Sylvia didn’t wear a wire. She couldn’t risk it because of her daily intimacy with the Corsican. But Manny was looking for an opportunity. A recording would be the sure way to erase loose ends and reasonable doubts.

Manny’s first tail was in early June, so easy it was almost a joke. John caught up with Sylvia as she slowed her delicate click-clacking on the sidewalk, a couple of blocks from the Corsican’s apartment. It was two in the morning, but the streets were still plenty active. Manny dipped into a dark driveway, diagonally across from the serendipitous encounter. Sylvia moved like a dancer in a slow rumba, and John heeled before making his move, brushing her arm as he walked past. He turned and did a double take, so sure that Sylvia, like every female on earth, lived and breathed for his attention.

Even from a distance, Manny could see the virile chest puffing and the cock of the head. The rest he could imagine. There was a stupid grin and a trite pickup line.
