Chapter Eleven
Flynn didnât know what had possessed him to kiss Lori the way he had, but he couldnât bring himself to regret it, even knowing it likely meant little to her. Heâd been an idiot to think he could spend the morning with her and not kiss her. Every time they were alone together, he ended up kissing her. It was like a biological imperative. Sheâd never know what it had cost him not to accept her invitation the previous night. Only the knowledge of where it would end had made him remain in the car. Maybe the best thing for both of them would be for her to leave the cottage and find a place to stay in town for the remainder of her visit. Having her on the farm was messing with his head.
Maybe more than just his head.
He wasnât sure he could spend another couple of weeks with her around, only to watch her leave again. But the thought of not seeing her caused an ache to settle in the center of his chest.
Heâd never felt so conflicted in his life.
By the time they returned to the farm, the sun had made a heroic appearance, burning away the last vestiges of mist that clung to the surrounding hills and fields.
âLook there,â he said as he parked the car near the cottage. âA rainbow.â
The translucent arch of color stretched over the narrow inlet of water below the farm, and he smiled at Loriâs indrawn gasp of delight.
âWhen Rachel first came over here, she called me in Chicago and tried to describe this place. I envisioned green fields full of sheep and rainbows around every corner.â She laughed softly. âI wasnât wrong.â
âWe do have our share of sheep,â he agreed, unable to suppress a grin as they watched a flock graze on the hillside. After climbing out of the car, he walked around to her side and opened her door, and they stood for a moment, admiring the dramatic scenery.
âHave you ever wanted to do something else?â Lori asked, turning to look at him. âI mean, I realize the farm has been in your family for generations, but I do know something about the pressures of working for the family business. Itâs not always everything itâs cracked up to be.â
âDid you always want to work for your fatherâs company?â Flynn countered, leaning back against the car and pushing his hands into the pockets of his jeans.
Lori gave him a pointed look that told him she wouldnât be put off by his tactic. âLetâs just say I knew what was expected of me. My parents always assumed Iâd work for Lakeside Industries, and I guess I did too.â
âAnd now?â
Lori blew out a hard breath and leaned her hip against the car, facing him. âIâm not so sure, to be honest. I really thought the commodities manager position was meant for me. Not created for me, of course, but something I would be good at. Meeting people, sourcing new products, and managing inventoryâitâs something I enjoy doing.
