Chapter Nineteen

Isla sat in her car and let out a deep breath. Therapy always stole the energy from her. It was supposed to—at least that’s what she told herself every time she went. And she’d come back with a fuller understanding of what was going on between her and Andry, not to mention Larisa’s push to rely on that relationship instead of putting the weight of her life in Wil’s hands. It was a crush—but it was teetering on the brink of being far more than just that. She trusted Andry, which wasn’t something she could say for many people in her life.

Trust was the be-all and end-all of any relationship.

As soon as that trust was broken, she booted people out of her life faster than they could come up with a rebuttal. She’d always been that way, which was why her circle in life was so damn small, and why it was so difficult for her and Lynda.

Forcing her way out of her car, Isla flashed her badge against the door to get inside the building. She built herself up with each step as she went, preparing to teach for the rest of the day before she could go home and crash for the night. She was desperate for it. Squaring her shoulders, her shoes clicking as she walked down the empty hall that was alive with energy, she let it seep into her bones.

Isla grabbed the handle for her classroom, taking one last second to steel herself for whatever she was going to be greeted with. Pushing the door open, she stepped inside and stopped short. A rush of breath left her lungs as she stared at her very empty classroom. She wasn’t sure she had ever seen it so empty before, even when she moved into it each fall and out each spring.

“What the…” Isla stepped inside, skimming over the empty space on the floor where her students should be, where their tables and chairs should be.

Moving toward her desk, she stopped when that was gone too. Isla glanced back at the door, her heart racing as the silence permeated the dark recesses of her mind. Panic swelled in her chest, tightening against her ribs before she calmed it down. She needed to figure out what was going on quickly. The resounding rap made her jump three feet back. The knock on the window from outside and when she was greeted with Andry’s bright smile and face, Isla knew all was well.

Behind Andry sat her entire class, perfect in their seats as they watched her reaction. Busting out in a laugh, Isla put her hands to her mouth and dropped her purse on the floor. Tears filled the corners of her eyes as she shook her head at them, laughing. Moving to the window, Isla opened it wide and pointed at the kids.

“You are all crazy! Oh my god.” She laughed again, making eye contact with Andry.

Immediately, Isla left her classroom and headed outside. She put her hands on her hips as she walked out, a smile she hadn’t been able to wipe away on her lips.
