SHE PUT HER FORK DOWN. This was a hard question, indeed. “I suppose I do consider myself saved, but I wasn’t much of a praying woman until the war, though my Mama worked hard to teach us everything about the Bible. I guess I’d venture to say my faith needs a lot of work.”

“We all have to start somewhere,” Caleb replied.

“I believe the war changed me. I was never as frightened in all my life as when Sherman’s troops marched through Georgia and occupied most of the state. I couldn’t sleep at night unless I said my prayers for our safety and read from the Bible. It seemed to draw me closer to God. I knew I needed Him for the first time in my life—truly needed Him.” She almost added she’d spent hours praying for Ryan’s safe return, but she wasn’t ready to discuss Ryan with him. However, his disappearance had been part of her problem with faith. Between him not returning home and the devastation facing her in every direction from war, her fragile faith had begun to crumble. How had her thoughts returned to the topic of war again? She wondered where God was in the mess and aftermath of war.

When she looked up from her plate, she found him studying her closely, again. Had she given him a sufficient answer? Would he think poorly of her now because she hadn’t had a strong faith prior to the war? She certainly couldn’t say she had a strong faith post-war, either.

Caleb leaned back in his chair for a moment. He seemed to be choosing his words carefully. “War is a hard thing. Of course your faith has come under fire. You and your family have been through a lot, as have many in the north and the south. The Lord will strengthen you. I’ll pray for that for you, and for your faith to be refreshed, and built up. I hope you’ll like Reverend Lawrence and his sermons since the common thread we both have is the Lutheran church. We haven’t any Catholics in Pelican Rapids. The only other ministers are a circuit rider preacher and a Congregationalist minister.”

“I’d prefer to attend the Lutheran services. I like the little church by the river, and I like Grace Lawrence. The preacher seems nice, too.” Surely he wouldn’t consider attending those other churches. She’d best speak up. “I rather like the idea of attending where we were married. I am well-adapted to attending the Lutheran services when visiting my Aunt Ginger, and of course, you now know my Mama was raised on it.”

“That’s perfectly fine with me, but you know, church attendance doesn’t mean anything when it comes to our salvation.” Caleb drank some more of the sweet tea and then sliced into another bite of ham.

“My Pa might argue the same, for different reasons. As a plantation owner, there are a hundred things to be done, much like it is for any busy, successful farmer.” Charlotte tasted some of the peas from the garden.
