Chapter Sixteen
Alice pulled her standing mixer to the edge of the counter and tossed in the ingredients for chocolate chip cookies as her mind wandered through the events of last night and that morning.
Something major had shifted in her life.
Well, it was obviously Bridge. But there was a whole slew of facets sheâd once thought of as individual aspects that were now joined into a single, comprehensive entity. Once a cacophony of attributes with no rhyme or reason now happened to add up to who she was and made sense now. Sheâd opened her heart to allow entry to something she never thought sheâd have again. Not only Bridge but also the acceptance of herself but all of the rules, judgment, and subsequent condemnation in the name of human-constructed morals were not things that she was constrained by anymore. Sheâd shed those shackles at the first touch from Bridge last night.
If sheâd been the one to write the Book of Revelation now, it would have been a drastically different prognostication: rebirth, fulfillment, peace, and love. A shiver coursed through her at the shift she felt within her soul, her whole existence. She felt cleansed. Baptized in a whole new breadth of understanding.
But there was still something underneath it all. Something new was trying to speak to her. The promise of what it was happened over twenty-five years ago when she and Sister Mary Bridget had whispered their first âI love you,â but she hadnât been free from the consequences of back then. Not like she was now. God reveled in their pure love, and sheâd imagined golden scripture exalting the joining of their spirits. Sheâd seen it, even if the Church hadnât. And as much as Bridge claimed that religion held no shackles on her, her continuing struggle appeared to prove just the opposite, showing she was held in place by it while Alice had found her freedom.
Last night had been an awakening; she knew this as she preheated the oven. Back then, God was her whole existence, woven into the fabric of her very purpose. Now, God walked with her, but not everything she did was solely in the name of God. She was free to have her own life, her own love, her own pleasure, and it wasnât taking a thing away from God.
With this knowledge, she relished the memory of her night. She couldnât wait to tell Bridge. Maybe it would help to free her, too.
The clock told her it was almost five when she pulled the last batch of cookies out of the oven and moved them to the cooling rack. Shia and Rose were taking care of the ice chests and wood for the bonfire. The only things she was responsible for were Bridge, cookies, and a bottle of wine. After she and Bridge had pried themselves out of bed, sheâd gotten dressed in one of her new outfits. As embarrassed as she was about the collection of clothing sheâd amassed in the last month or so, it gave her a new confidence.
