Chapter 10

By the time Adair’s men emerged with them on the mountain path, the sun had just set over the horizon. They had lashed Harper’s unconscious body to Bryce’s back with a length of rope they pulled from Breck’s bag.

“Aren’t you worried she’ll drown?” Prion demanded as they lowered her body into the hole in the candlelit cave.

Adair, standing to one side, frowned with negligent grace. “Not particularly. If she drowns, she drowns. But I’m counting on her magic to save her.” He gave Prion a cocky grin. “We’ll see what kind of witch she really is, I guess.”

Prion clenched his jaws to keep back the angry retort that threatened to burst from his lips. Keep calm, he told himself. Stay collected. We might get out of this yet.

They swam back through the underwater tunnel, and Prion was relieved to see that Harper was still breathing when they emerged on the other side. As long as she was alive, there was a chance his sealskin could be repaired. Thankfully, Adair’s men had only done cursory investigations into his or Leannán’s packs—they’d seen the spare set of clothes wrapped around the sealskins and had looked no deeper.

Adair’s men bound their hands behind their backs with cut lengths of Breck’s rope. “For insurance, mind,” the tall man said in a reassuring voice. His manner was one of doing a household chore that’s tedious but not unpleasant. He even hummed while he did it.

They were halfway down the trail leading down the mountain when the wind picked up. A howling started from the far side of the mountain, loud enough that Adair’s men stopped to look around, their swords raised.

Prion stepped closer to Leannán and put her body between him and the mountain wall.

“Behind us!” one of the twins screamed, and they all whirled to look.

A giant red bull was charging through the air towards them, curving around the mountain stone as if it had started on the same path as them just further up. It was made of gas and vapor that flickered like flames, and when it snorted, actual fire shot in twin balls into the air above their heads.

They all broke into a run, captive and captor roles forgotten in their terror as they slipped and skidded on the gravel path.

The bull bellowed as it charged past them, overshooting them. It curved in the air, rolling back on its haunches to whirl back towards them, bellowing and screaming like a banshee from the seventh level of hell.

“Run!” Prion screamed at Leannán, planting a hand on her shoulder and pushing her forward. “Don’t stop!” Ahead of them, Breck raced past the twins and overtook the tall man, whose long legs loped down the path like a deer.

They all bolted down the path, dodging fireballs shooting from the bull’s nostrils that crashed into explosive firebombs behind them. Prion risked a glance over his shoulder. To his horror, he saw the bull pause and inhale, its barrel-like sides heaving open like bellows. Two
