Another rumour from the Heads. There must be a bit of truth in this one. There’s a ruddy great hole in the deck where Y gun turret used to be. They patched it up a bit during the long four weeks in Archangel, but they didn’t have much equipment there. They didn’t have much of anything there. No beer, no girls, at least none that would swap a few jokes with the matelots. No shoes, no chocolate, no food. And flat. Oh to be in good old Blighty where you can at least get a pint of bitter and a good laugh. They’re decent blokes, Uncle Joe’s Ruskies. Good fighters. And Natasha’s a lovely girl, or she would be if she was allowed to be a bit friendly. It’s a long weekend in the Urals for her if she’s caught fraternising. You’re bored, but at least you’re not being bombed out of the water. And after four weeks it’s over, and you’re off again thank God, setting out on the long trip home, when you won’t be so bored, though you might be bombed out of the water. In spite of the patching up they’ll be due for a boiler clean and some serious repairs by the time they get back, let’s all hope for a good bit of leave. It’s too much to hope for that they’ll be ordered to Guz for their boiler clean, and Giles can show his family round the ship. But it happens.
