“I feel like a ghostbuster,” I said, strapping a laser tag vest on my back and chest. “This is awesome.”

“I was hoping you’d like it,” Derek said.

“I think we’re the oldest ones here.”

“It’s okay. It’s fun to shoot kids.” He smirked.

We were strapped up and ready to shoot, waiting in line for our first game to begin. There was a long line of nearly twenty participants, and we were divided into two teams. Derek and I were on the red team, and we were supposed to shoot as many on the green team as we could. A timer counted down, three, two, one, and we walked briskly into the laser tag arena (we were told not to run, unfortunately, but that was a rule I was hoping we could break under the dark umbrella of the arena).

It was a huge warehouse style room that had been converted into a laser tag adventure. Props of walls, fake hills, bunkers, and tunnels were set up all around. Fog machines, lasers, and strobe lights made the room a like a sci-fi film, and music pulsated through many large speakers. It was incredible.

“Over there.” Derek pointed, and we ran up some stairs. “A higher level is better. We’ll get a clear shot of those on the ground.” He hid behind a thick cardboard wall and shot down at some kids below. Our laser gun showed how many hits we had accumulated. I already had five, but Derek had eleven.

“Nice shot,” I told him.

“Thanks.”

We held our ground, but in a few moments some kids snuck up behind us and started shooting.

“Ahhhh!” I screamed and ran towards them, but my gun wouldn’t work. Once you’ve been shot, it was put on a short delay. “Damn kids!”

Derek laughed. “You sound like an old man.”

“We’ll see who’s old. Forget hiding. Let’s take them head on.” I sprinted like a soldier on a killing spree and Derek followed. We shot everyone in sight. It was hard to tell who was on your team, but you only got points for shooting your opponents. A small green light flashed on the vest and gun of the opposing team, so we looked specifically for those but shot anyone in sight. We ran a full loop upstairs, and then went back down. The majority of the kids were fighting below.

“Okay, let’s run and shoot from here to that wall over there. It looks like we can hide behind it,” I stated, as if I were a military expert.

“You got it,” Derek replied.

“Ahhh!” I yelped and ran again, probably not the best idea, as it gave me away, but I was having too much fun to care. I shot a dozen kids on the ground floor and slid like a baseball player behind the wall. Derek was right behind me.

“I’m up to 20 hits!” I cheered looking at my counter.

“Nice. I’m at 19. You’re a natural at shooting small children,” he joked.

I laughed. “I’m glad you suggested this. It’s awesome.”

We hid behind the wall for a moment and then Derek pointed at a tunnel to our right.
