Angel opened his eyes.
The artificial lighting was so stark that he squeezed his eyes tight shut and the glare still made him wince. He counted to ten ⦠slowly ⦠regulating his breathing, then opened them again. His eyelids flickered.
He wasnât at home. He was in a basic room: plain white walls, bare lamp overhead, other beds lined up in a row like a conveyor belt. Other beds. Angel glanced along the line without moving. The beds were occupiedâeveryone appeared to be sleeping.
He closed his eyes again allowing his brain to settle into his surroundings until he was ready to form some coherent thoughts. What did he remember? He and Eddie went to Intington. They came back, crossed the bridge, but neither of them wanted to return home so they sheltered in the spot where the bridge joined the riverbank. Eddie wanted to run away. They had a moment ⦠here, his thoughts lingered a while. They kissed. Theyâd kissed before, but this was different, this meant something. Then there were lights, a voice reaching them from a loudspeaker, hands grabbing them, and then darkness.
Eddie!
His breathing grew shallow, and he forced himself to breathe in through his nose, one ⦠two ⦠three ⦠and out through his mouth. Theyâd taken Eddie. He didnât know where theyâd taken her, or if she was still being detained, but theyâd brought him in to question him about the platinum ring. Theyâd been tracking him in Intington. Heâd known this would happen, which was the reason why heâd insisted on handling the transaction with Anton himself, so that there was no comeback on Eddie, but he had no idea if it had worked.
He focused his thoughts on what had happened next. Theyâd woken him. He was in a small, brightly lit room with two chairs: one for him and one for his interrogator. A man in a black suit. He held a device in his hand. Angel knew what it meantâwhether he complied or not, he was about to be deactivated. Heâd broken the rules of the program, been complicit with the targetâs movements, even instigating the meeting with Anton, and failed to report back to the officials. The man questioned him about their reason for traveling to Intington. Angel lied. He denied all knowledge of the platinum ring and the black suit hit the deactivation button.
It all slotted into place in his mind, with one exception. Why was he awake now?
Had something gone wrong?
Or were they coming back to interrogate him again? If so, he didnât think that theyâd be quite so lenient. Heâd never heard of family spies being killed, but he wasnât so naïve that he didnât think them capable of murder.
He still felt as though he were missing something ⦠theyâd sent someone else to speak to him in the small room. His eyelids flickered as he cast around in his fuggy mind for the memory. His father. His father was brought in to help them convince his son to reveal what he knew.
