Frowning, Longarm tried to decipher the signature, but it too had been ripped by the bullet, and he could only guess from the loops of the words above the torn-out spot that the name might have been Phillip or William. There were the loops of a double L, barely visible at the top edge of the missing part. The rest of the word was gone, as was the name of the senator to whom the letter had been addressed.

Longarm tucked the letter into his own breast pocket and went on with his search. The dead man's right-hand breast pocket yielded nothing except two crumpled cigars. A handkerchief was in one of his trousers pockets, a small penknife in another. The other pockets were emnty.

Mart Dugean came in just as Longarm was finishing his search. "Hear you had a little trouble," he said.

"Nothing I couldn't handle." Longarm jerked his head at the corpse. "You know this fellow?"

Duggan studied the dead man's features. He shook his head. "I can't recollect seeing him around Lead-ville before, Longarm. But that don't signify. Men come and go here so much, I sure can't keep-up with all of them/'

"Chances are, he ain't been here more than a day or so."

Longarm didn't mention the letter, which gave a pretty good hint that the man had arrived only a short time in advance of Grant.

"I'm right sure he was tagging along with us while we went through town, earlier," he continued. "And he followed me and Grant into the toilet at Tabor's hotel. I didn't get a real good look at him, but enough to know he's the same one."

"Well, what do you want me to do?" Duggan asked.

"Hell, Mart, there ain't a whole lot you can do. If you can get a tintype artist to make some pictures of his face, and give them to your men and ask around,
