Longarm left Sara and Midnight the next morning feeling as if he’d been pulled through the wringer. He hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before and he was feeling a touch light-headed. But he was smiling. Sara was going to spend the morning moving things from her apartment over to his apartment. “And when you get back, you’ll hardly recognize the place,” she had vowed. “I’m going to fix it up real nice.”

Longarm caught an image of doilies and lace and it didn’t sit well. “Look,” he said, “don’t do much. I like things simple. Besides, you need to find a job and save enough money to get a place of your own. Remember?”

She kissed his mouth. “Do you really want me to move out as soon as I can?”

He didn’t quite know what to say. “Just . . . just enjoy yourself and watch out for my alley cat.”

“Will do.”

Midnight had vanished sometime in the wee hours of the morning, but Longarm knew the cat would return soon for another meal. Hell, by the time he returned from Salt Lake City or wherever the path would lead in this investigation, Midnight would probably be domesticated.

And that would be a pity.
