THE VACANT AFTERNOONS IN LA turned torturous. While New York had been electric in its towering energy, I found Hollywood to be an enervating, flat pancake, where even my best efforts seemed to vanish like vapor in the relentless sunshine. Even something as simple as spontaneously popping into a cultural event, one of my great joys in Manhattan life, was impossible in LA without a preplanned, often bumper-to-bumper forty-five-minute drive.

So I became a jogger.

“That’s ridiculous!” Mother said, “What are you running from, Tovah?”

I wanted to say, “I’m running from Ray Katz.” He was a well-known manager who took me under his wing. I met him through Mac Davis.

He said, “Tovah, my girl, you’re too intellectual. This is Hollywood. You need to promote a more sexual side at these meetings. I have an idea. Why don’t you not wear underwear to your next audition? Not wearing underwear might inspire you to be more sensual in the audition room.”

Slamming calm across my face, I replied, “Ray, what is most disturbing about this request is that you are on my team. You only want what’s best for me, and this is what you think is best for me?”

Let the record show, Ray, that in honor of your memory, I am writing this chapter without a stitch of underwear.

Back then, I was thinking, I better pack up my Elizabeth Taylor skin and head back to New York. But I couldn’t. I was married, and I had commuted enough to disgust both my mother and my husband. Years later, everyone was in on that joke on the set of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Alexis Colwell, assistant director, pasted a big picture of Elizabeth Taylor outside my trailer as if it were my headshot with the caption underneath, “Tovah Feldshuh and her Famous Skin!”
