Lightfoot would have made a perfect addition to the show, but since spontaneity wasn’t his strong suit, he never appeared onstage. The Last Waltz went on to become one of the most revered concert movies of all time.
Lightfoot remained focused on his increasingly busy schedule, heading back south of the border early in 1977. After three dates in Lake Tahoe, he flew to Los Angeles for the nineteenth annual Grammy Awards at the Hollywood Palladium. “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” was nominated for two awards. Dressed in his “penguin suit” tuxedo and wearing tinted aviator shades, an overweight Lightfoot sat in the audience with Cathy Coonley, watching performances by Natalie Cole, Sarah Vaughan and the duet of Chet Atkins and Les Paul. Stevie Wonder won four awards that night, beating Lightfoot for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Host Andy Williams, who’d recorded Lightfoot’s “The Last Time I Saw Her” and “If You Could Read My Mind,” joked that it was good of the Grammys to throw a get-together for Stevie. Then the 5th Dimension’s Billy Davis Jr. and Marilyn McCoo sang portions of all the compositions nominated for Song of the Year, with Davis offering the first two lines of “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” Never have the words “Gitche Gumee” sounded more soulful. In the end, Lightfoot lost out to Barry Manilow’s “I Write the Songs,” written by Beach Boy Bruce Johnston. Lightfoot claims it was a good thing he didn’t win that night at the Grammys.
