I trusted John completely. And he was to be a big part of everything that happened in the months to come.

I’d met him years before he became my manager. He and his company represent many celebrities and run big sporting events for charity, so it wasn’t surprising that we first met at a charity dinner. John’s sister, Jane, had been born with learning disabilities, and the dinner was to raise money for Rainbows, a children’s hospice based in Loughborough, near John’s office. Through John’s connection with Rainbows, I’ve continued to support this brilliant charity ever since. John and I became good friends, and later, in around 2000, he became my manager.

The thing was, in the wake of the horrendous situation with Jimmy Savile, John had told me I might be a target, because at that time celebrities were being accused of similar crimes. I really hadn’t thought any more about it, but he later told me he’d been concerned for a lot of the public figures he represented, and he’d prepared the team at Champions.

John’s theory was that two significant media interviews I’d done had some part to play in my arrest: my Piers Morgan interview in 2012, and my more recent interview with New Zealand journalist Garth Bray, which had stirred up all the press furore before and during that New Zealand trip.

Piers Morgan’s Life Stories aired on 13 April 2012. It was an hour-long interview on primetime ITV. The interview series had been running for some time – this was series 7 – and Piers had had many well-known figures talk to him, from Frank Bruno to James Corden. At that time he was the editor of the Daily Mirror – the youngest editor in the newspaper’s history – and a celebrity in his own right.

Ken’s colourful relationship history on the Street was Piers’ way into talking about my personal life. Ken’s had 22 girlfriends, four wives (if you count both marriages to Deirdre), three children – Susan, Peter and Daniel – and a step-daughter, Tracy. In my real life, it’s been no secret that my first marriage failed because I’d been unfaithful. I was working away from home five nights a week and the opportunity to stray was there. I deeply regret this, and because of it I lost my marriage and was separated from my two older children, Linus and Vanya, for some time. But I certainly wasn’t Ken, going from one marriage to the next. In my marriage to Sara I had been completely faithful, and we had been together for 31 years and had three beautiful children, Verity, Edwina and William.

Nevertheless, Piers persisted in asking me how many women I’d slept with and I said I did not know. He started throwing numbers around. This was personal, and I didn’t want to talk about it. So I deflected his questions with a shrug or a ‘maybe’, and at one stage I even jokingly pretended to walk off-stage to show I didn’t really appreciate his line of questioning.
