Chapter Eighteen

Once the kitchen stopped spinning, and my vision started to clear Maddie and I walked down the hallway to grab our bags to leave for home. We took the time to make the bed that we destroyed the night before, placing all the throw pillows meticulously back onto the bed. We exited the room and made our way back down the hallway and out onto the back porch from the kitchen. My mother and John were waiting for us in the driveway by our truck. My mother embraced me in a hug before I opened the truck door, her eyes apologetic.

“I want you to have these.” She handed them to me slowly, her eyes lingering over the picture she gave me. It was Zach. He was smiling widely, all teeth, not a shadow of sorrow on his face. He was six in this photo, and he had just gotten his braces off in time for the first-grade school picture. On the back of the photo was his name written in his big blocky six-year-old handwriting and the year: 2003. “Maybe they can bring you some form of peace.”

“Thank you.” I mumbled. She wrapped me in a hug and said goodbye. I could tell she wanted to say more, apologize formally, something, but she stole herself and let go of me. I slid the picture of Zach in my jeans pocket and said goodbye back.

“It was nice to meet you Maddie, I very much enjoyed our talks this weekend.” She pulled Maddie into a hug, taking Maddie off guard. “I hope we see you both again soon.” She let go of Maddie and said goodbye. Her smile wavered as she watched us pile our things into our pick-up truck and slide into the front seats. I put my seatbelt on and started the car, backing out of her long driveway as I watched my mother and John wave us off from the driveway.

The drive home was mostly silent, each of us focusing on the road ahead as the rain stopped and started continuously until we reached Missouri around eight o’clock in the evening. We kept driving, both of us anxious to get home. I switched places with Maddie around ten o’clock so that she could drive through the night to make it back to Cumberland Gap by early morning.

We arrived home around five thirty in the morning. It was Monday. Maddie and I drove twenty hours straight. She pulled into the boarding house, shut the car off and kissed me, a sense of relief washing over both of us.

We were home.

Despite our exhaustion she kissed me a little longer, her lips parting mine to kiss me a little deeper. I fell into her kiss, my tongue sliding down her throat, exploring the depths of her mouth. She let go of my lips and opened the door of the car, her eyes barely open. “I don’t know how you do this; I have to go to bed.”

We unloaded the truck and dragged our bags behind us into the house.
