Father and Children

I read the article by Mrs. Merchel, who writes about the influence of a mother on the rearing of her children. I agree with Mrs. Merchel that a mother can do a great deal for her children and that she largely rears them by herself. However, the father can also have a great influence on the rearing of his children. Unfortunately, however, many fathers prefer to go to a “Beer-Garden” than to occupy themselves with their sons or daughters. In the majority of homes, when the father comes, all get out of the house and leave him at peace as if the father was some kind of scarecrow.

And it should not be so. I myself have three sons and I live with them in great friendship, but I began to occupy myself with them and play with them from their youngest years. One has to win the trust of one’s son while he is still a small child. Once the son grows up, then it is already too late to try to win his friendship.

Should a father not become friends with his children when they are small, then he becomes a stranger to them and later efforts to establish contact with his children already become useless. One must take interest in the plans and matters of one’s children, carry on conversations with them, play with them, and form their soul and mind. Truly, one has to sacrifice some time to this and simultaneously have patience and understanding for children, and above all one has to truly love them.

[15 lines omitted here]

A father’s friendship is the greatest treasure that we can give to our children. It is greater than a [material] fortune and efforts must be made to achieve it on time. Let all fathers remember this and not leave the children only to the mothers to rear.
