The barracks seemed somehow hollow without Godber. Evans wasn’t the only one affected by the loss – the other lads had liked the amiable chap just as much. He’d been replaced, of course – a raw, wet-behind-the-ears kid named Saylor. Typical army – a soldier named Saylor.

There had been a memorial, and a few pints at The Bell Inn, and then training went on, pretty much as usual. Captain Younghusband had made some sort of polite speech, but Evans barely heard a word of it.

Everybody accepted Saylor – it was pretty much an unspoken decision that this was exactly what Tommy would have done – and when the pain cleared a bit, somehow Evans discovered that the lad seemed to expect to be his mate. It didn’t seem worth the bother to tell him to clear off, so he let the kid stay. It seemed to be the right thing to do, even if his heart wasn’t in it. And somebody had to teach the kid the ropes.

Somehow, life went on, and training went on. Saylor was a bit hopeless, but he was only just eighteen, and what did anybody really know at that age? Evans knew he’d been worse when he was that young, so he exercised some patience. The kid wasn’t all that bad, despite the fact that he insisted on drinking lime and lager at the pub instead of a decent pint.
