0102 Mercy
The armored boy stands all alone, the bleak silence of the night around him. He tilts his head and mutters, “9C, clear. Middle hour. Three until the rise.” A burst of static at his ear, though what’s being said to him cannot be heard. “Two. Man and man with raised voices about their home, but no fight. Then a boy who’d run from his mom and fell into the Waterways. Recovered, just a bruise about his arm. No hospital called. No arrest made.”
The armored boy holds his helmet under an arm, listening to something in the earpiece. “That is correct,” he mutters. Then the boy turns his face to the left to peer down the street, then to the right. “Copy.” The boy starts moving.
And so does she.
She is so quick, the armored boy doesn’t even have a spare moment to lift his hands above his waist. He gasps and struggles for exactly one second before a knife comes to rest at his throat.
The helmet drops to the pavement with a heavy metallic thump.
Mercy does not pull the knife; she simply holds it there with her patient, gripped fingers. She’s wrapped her other arm tightly around him like a lover, pulling his armored body against hers, her back to the bumpy brick wall of a closed-down leather-and-boot boutique.
“Hey, sweetie,” she whispers into his exposed ear, tickling the hairs near it.
He doesn’t respond. He’s tensed up, his fingers outstretched in front of him as if he were telling a dog in front of him to stay, to not attack, to calm down, to keep cool. She squeezes him slightly with her arm, as if to remind him, like a dog, that he’s under her control.
“Let’s play a game,” she whispers. “You tell me your name, you tell me your partner’s name, and I’ll tell you what I want. If you can get it for me, I’ll let you keep your dick.”
“Tell me what you want,” he says quietly, his voice shaking. “I’ll get it for you. I’ll get you whatever you want.”
“That’s not the deal.” The knife’s hold grows more firm against his throat. From the tensing of his armored buttocks against her, she can tell he notices. “Name first, Guardian boy. Then, your partner’s name. I know you travel in pairs. And, if you’re feeling generous, perhaps you can let me in on your partner’s whereabouts.”
“He’s taking a piss,” the boy gets out quickly, sounding much like he’s doing the same in his pants right now. “Around the bend. Please. I’ve a girlfriend. I’ve a sickly mother at home who needs my income and I’ve no other fam. My name’s Regory, but I’m called—”
The sound of clinking metal to her left alerts her. She twists, turning the Guardian boy she’s captured to face another who’s just come around the corner, fussing with his helmet in his grip and muttering out loud: “Reminds me of another point I wanted to make. Neons! Glows! Why do they insist on—” He comes to a stop when he looks up and sees what he sees, his eyes widening.
