Chapter 8
That night, Roselyn cooked dinner for them. Gianni said he wanted privacy. That he needed to talk with Leah about all that was happening, and to let her know what to expect. While the cook prepared the trout almondine, they shared a bottle of Pinot Noir from Burgundy.
Leah dressed casually, since it was to be an evening to relax in front of the fireplace and talk. They sat on the overstuffed sofa and gazed into the fire. The windows along the wall reflected the flicker of the flames. The overhead lighting was dimmed.
Gianni took off his shoes and put his feet up on the table. Leah followed his lead, and slipped off her pumps to dig her toes into the thick carpet. “I like this wine,” she said, looking over at him.
There was no response. Gianni was lost in thought. She took another sip of wine, and waited. He put his arm around her shoulders, but hadn’t noticed she’d spoken. Leah placed her hand on his thigh and squeezed. “How did the meeting go?”
That got his attention. Gianni turned to look at her, but Leah was unable to read his expression. He didn’t seem upset. Worried, she guessed. He took a sip of wine before answering her. Gianni held his glass up to examine the color, but she knew he wasn’t thinking about that at all.
“I’m not sure how to protect you,” he said.
“From what?”
Gianni put his glass on the table and turned to face her. “Ava will publically smear my reputation. She resents the fact that she cannot have me. And will do all she can to destroy me.” He looked into the distance, as if picturing her. “I know her that well. And today I saw it in her eyes.”
Leah fingered her glass. “I had hoped something good would come from the meeting.”
His single laugh told her that hadn’t been the case. “It was strange being there, seeing her.”
Leah tried to imagine Gianni with Ava. “I’m sure it was.”
“This is a woman I knew. Intimately.” He shook his head.
Leah cringed at the use of the word, but tried not to let her reaction show. “What’s she like?”
“She’s changed,” Gianni said. “Ava is not the woman I knew.”
Leah looked at him intently. “In what way?”
“If I had met her today, for the first time, I would not have chosen her as my submissive. She was haughty and manipulative. Yet, when we were together, she was happier, I guess. At least in the beginning. Or so it seemed.”
“Do you know what changed?”
“Now that I think of it, Ava was always sad, in a way.” Gianni studied the fire as it crackled and sparked. “She didn’t talk to me about her past, and I didn’t press. At first, the relationship satisfied both of us. For me, the relationship was sexually convenient.”
Leah held back from saying that their relationship was the same. Because she wasn’t sure that was true anymore. “Daniela said that you never took Ava to meet your family.”
“No, I didn’t.
