Chapter 10

With her heart shaking from emotions she did not understand, Ada hurriedly tugged on her thick cotton robe over her nightgown, ran to the door and wrenched it open. She ran as silently as possible down the carpeted hallway and down the winding staircase to the lower floors of the massive ranch house. She went through the kitchen’s backdoor, crying out softly when her bare feet sank into the wet prickly grass. Pushing aside the discomfiture, she sprinted across the lawn toward the stables. She saw Noah leading his horse from the stables and toward the lane, Dutch padding beside him.

She paused a few feet away, panting slightly. The night was still, and the only sound was the cicadas and her breathing. The man ahead moved like a silent predator in the stillness of the dark. The moor was a mere sliver of light, but she was certain it was Noah. “Are you really leaving without saying goodbye?”

He faltered but did not turn around. Ada’s heart pounded even harder as she waited for him to speak.

“Noah?”

“There is nothing to say, Ada,” he said in an odd, yet gentle tone.

She stared at his back, hating that tears pricked her eyes. “It is this easy for you?” she asked in a suffocated whisper.

His shoulders stiffened.

“What do you want from me?” he growled, low and hard without turning around. As if he could not face her after everything they shared. But truly, what had they shared?

“Nothing,” Ada snapped, just as low and hard. “I want nothing from you if it is this easy for you to walk away and never see me again. Goodbye, Noah Kincaid!”

She waited, and a choked cry escaped her as he continued walking away. Refusing to cry or call after him, she spun around and made her way back to the main house. As she passed the bunkhouse, rough hands grabbed her. Ada’s shocked scream was cut off by the hand that slapped over her mouth.

“She sure made it darn easy for us, Pete. Grab a horse, and let’s get the hell out of here with her before anyone realizes she’s gone.”

Ada tried to scream again, but it only came out as a muffled grunt. She twisted and bucked wildly, trying to get away from his grip.

“Cut her, Johnny, show her we mean business, and she better be fucking quiet as we leave.”

“Where,” a voice close to her ear muttered.

“Her face, do it quickly!”

The cold press of a blade was placed to her cheek, and she stiffened. Fear tore through her heart, and she tried to suppress the emotions.

A low, wicked growl pulsed through the night air.

“What the hell was that?”

Dutch. And that meant his master was close by. Relief scythed through her, and she relaxed in the man’s arm. Suddenly he grunted, and the arms around her went limp.

“Pete, what—”

A massive streak in the moonlit shadows, and the man’s scream was cut off as Dutch went for his throat.

“Dutch!” Noah snapped, and the dog backed away, growling in his throat.
