ADMITTING DEFEAT

Alfred dismissed the men and turned to go back into the fortress. Ealswith was standing by the gateway, watching in silence. He stepped beside her as if to go inside but she shook her head and took his hand.

‘Let us go and talk,’ she said. ‘Somewhere quiet.’

She led him away from the fortress to the southern side of the island. The creek where Brand kept his boat was little more than a trickle of water now. The boat was half-way up the bank, stranded by the retreating waters.

Ulf was lying on the ground, seeking to find a little hole in the hull. He was so engrossed he did not notice Alfred and Ealswith approach. They did not notice him.

Ealswith sat on the slope above the creek, surrounded by daisies and buttercups. She patted the ground and Alfred sat beside her. They sat in silence for a while and then Ealswith turned, looking back at the way they had walked.

‘We are alone,’ she said.

‘We are,’ Alfred answered. ‘And that is a thing unheard of. The fact that my men have left me unguarded does not bode well.’
