Chapter Thirteen

Oren

Oren paced down the stairs of the church’s tower before sitting down next to one of the narrow windows to stare out at the foggy landscape beyond, a desolate view as empty as his sense of self-worth at the moment. He stared down at his phone and flicked through the unanswered text messages from his omega father. Unsurprisingly, Oren couldn’t bring himself to respond, not since he left his father, forcing his hand to make Oren take the mantle. He scanned through the messages again, months of, I’m sorry. A few, please call me messages. And the final one sent weeks ago, I love you. No amount of love could change Oren’s anger.

The first thing that Oren wanted to do, the second he took the mantle, was to do away with the forced mateship laws, and to destroy the alphocracy they’d created, making the position a mere figurehead amid democratic votes. The people already grew tired of being led by blood. Two wrongs wouldn’t make a right. His being forced to be alpha didn’t make it right to force him. Oren sniffed and closed his eyes, raking his fingers over the texts. As he dragged his thumb up, he aimed a little too high and hit the call button and panicked, fidgeting until the receiver touched his ear.

“Oren! Oren? Oren, baby, please speak to me. Oren?”

Oren bit his tongue and sighed, considering hanging up before he broke down. “Hey.”

“Oren, oh heavens, it’s so good to hear from you. Baby, please…”

“They told you, yet? I’m taking alpha at summer solstice. I’ll lead the weep.” Oren went quiet.

“I see.” His dad silenced. Caine was emotional at the best of times.

“Will you take Father back when he leaves the church?” Oren took a deep breath. “Because there’s no point in me taking up the weep unless it saves your mateship.”

“It takes a toll, those things, Oren. An omega takes on the pain of their alpha. And that position is painful, and I am not equipped to deal with that. They did not train me to be that for the weep, nor was I gifted that way.” The crack of Caine’s voice made Oren tighten his jaw. He hated to hear his father cry. “But I miss Rasmuth so badly, dear. Your father is my world. It is less painful, only by a margin, to separate. I need him. You’ll understand when your mate steps up with you.”

“There won’t be a mate for me, Dad. There will be a partner that I will mate with, but as the chosen alpha, I will have to take one who is prepared for the role, not one I love. I will have to learn to love them.” Oren breathed into the line.

“I see. I was under the impression that you’d found your mate already. I—I’m sorry.”

“Me, too.”

“I appreciate this more than you’ll ever know, Oren. Your sacrifice is for the good of the weep.”

“Thanks, Dad. Thanks. Love you.” Oren stared at the ground for a moment. None of it was fair.
