Houseshare
A.L. Brooks
Kat hesitated on the doorstep. The front door to the impressive building was imposing, and none of this added up. She gazed up at the perfectly finished façade, the Georgian windows looking very much like they were originals, the brickwork impeccable. This house, like most in this part of London, screamed money, so why on earth was the rent being charged for the room so low?
Nelâs words came back to her. âThereâs a catch. There has to be.â
Theyâd poured over the ads online, trying to read between the lines of each one, and although they both kept coming back to this one for reasons they couldnât explain, they both had doubts.
âNo one rents out a room that cheaply in that area. It sounds like some kind of human trafficking or prostitution trap to me.â Nel looked serious, and that didnât happen often.
Kat had agreed with her, and theyâd moved on to other ads. But later that night, when she was tossing and turning on Nelâs sofa, the ad came back to her. It was the quality of the language used and the fact they hadnât tried to keep within the âthirty words for freeâ limit the website offered. The ad had run to nearly treble that and used full sentences with proper punctuation.
Kat was a sucker for proper punctuation.
So, without telling Nel, sheâd e-mailed the owners of the Georgian terrace in Pimlico. After an initial phone call with a woman who sounded very pleasant and certainly not like a human trafficker, as far as Kat could tell, they had arranged for Kat to view the room.
As she stood on the doorstep in the late Friday evening sunshine, Katâs resolve was giving way to the doubts sheâd had all along. No, this was crazy. Time to face up to the horrendous mistake she was about to make and turn tail.
She had taken one step backwards when the door swung open. Kat stared at the woman revealed by the opening door and only just resisted the urge to look skywards as the words you have got to be kidding me screamed inside her head.
The woman standing before her was tall, maybe six inches taller than Kat, who was no shorty at 5â7â. She had long, straight, black hair that fell around her bare shoulders. Her eyes were a piercing green, her face slightly angular but classically beautiful. The green strapless dress she wore hugged her body and emphasised full breasts and wide hips. And she smiled knowingly at Kat, as the recognition was clearly mutual.
Kat had crushed on this woman for about a year now. Sheâd spotted her at the various women-only clubs and bars around London that sheâd gone to with Nel, and Kat had been mesmerised from afar. Up close, the impact the woman had on her was nothing short of shocking. Kat couldnât breathe, and the sly smile the woman sported wasnât helping.
