Chapter XIV

The Bonds of Wit’tra

Fae Slums; Heart of the Night Market

HER BODY FLINCHED, pain unlike anything she could imagine licked across her skin. There was a strange prickling sensation settling beneath her flesh. She was drifting through a world of darkness. Images of eyes filled with rage flashed across her memories.

The gentle sensation of her hand being cradled drew her mind from its solitude. She could sense him now, looming over her, casting a shadow over the pain.

He was near. She was safe now.

‘Marked’, the Fae woman had said. At the memory, her eyes flew open.

She was sitting upon the floor, a tall shadow looming over her from above. She looked up sharply, and caught sight of a stranger’s face.

“Easy Child.”

His voice was like a silken balm smoothed over her raw nerves.

“Master?” Aacara mumbled softly.

“I’m here,” he answered, his voice holding a noticeable quiver.

‘Marked by the Huntress...’ Aacara felt a shiver run down her spine at the thought.

“What happened? I—” her voice faltered, new flashes of memory disorienting her.

They had been interrupted by an overhead announcement. The train jostling to a halt moments later. A guard, his helmet dented in on one side, hurried past the booths. He reached them, panting heavily. He proceeded to inform them there had been a break in, and that the prisoners had escaped!

The look of fury on her master’s face at the news, had terrified her. She had seen that look before, moments before a blow landed upon juvenile flesh.

The judicator had flown from his seat, hurrying after the Guard as he led the way. Aacara had followed quickly, tripping over her skirts, trying to keep up.

When they had reached the end of the luxury cars, the evidence of a fight was clear. The perpetrators had broken in from the roof. They had made quick work of the guards stationed to watch over the cargo. Then they had freed their companions, exiting through the same way they had entered. It had been clean, precise, and admirable.

The Judicator had been furious, screaming in rage at the guards. Aacara had stood back, watching silently. After the Judicator’s rage had subsided, he ordered the guards be punished for their incompetence. He then told the others to clean up the mess.

Hours later, after they had disembarked, the Judicator pacing frantically within his office at the Embassy, a spark of luck reached them. They had a visitor.

Wary of this stranger, the Judicator had reluctantly allowed them an audience. The stranger was let in by the city guard, and an elderly Fae man appeared.

Eyes as round as an owl’s stared at Aacara. The strange man’s lips had moved quickly, informing them of their enemies’ whereabouts. The Judicator was taken by surprise at first, not trusting of the Fae man’s words. But as he spilled his traitorous guts, revealing a mark upon his palm as proof of his loyalty, the Judicator smiled.

The Fae man was then allowed to return unhindered by the guards. He was told, when the time came, he would be set free for his help.
