Chapter Thirteen

Leo had not expected doing the right thing would give him such pleasure and found himself increasingly looking forward to the time he spent with Amelia. Evenings at the theatre and opera, along with dining together, followed on from their walk in Hyde Park. Outings were selected to ensure they were seen by members of Society. While the primary aim was to show the world that they were a courting couple, these social events became much more than a means to an end for Leo. The better acquainted he became with Amelia, the more he discovered his first impression of her to have been correct. She was an intelligent, lively young woman, one that any man would be proud to have as his wife.

There was a certain irony to the situation in which he found himself. He had been in love with a titled lady and had wanted to marry her, but had been rejected because of his lowly origins. Now he was attempting to show all of Society that he was willingly marrying the daughter of an earl and that this was a love match.

To prove that, all their interactions had been deliberately in the public eye, which meant no repeat of the kiss that had got them into this predicament. But there would certainly be time enough for that when they married, and surely anticipation would only make the final satisfaction even more rewarding.

Their wedding night was something he hoped Amelia was anticipating as eagerly as he was. He’d been given a tantalising glimpse of her delicious body when she wore that plunging neckline at his ball, and had explored her slim waist, rounded hips and delightful buttocks when he’d held her in his arms. Unwrapping her and gazing on her naked body alone would almost be worth giving up his bachelor status for. But on their wedding night, he would be doing much more than just indulging himself in an admiration of her naked beauty.

She may have said she had no wish to marry, but if he knew anything about women—and, having bedded a countless number of them, he believed he did—she certainly wanted him. Their kiss had shown him just how passionate she was. She had so quickly lost herself, given herself to him, and he was certain she would be eager to do the same on their wedding night.

He had every intention of making her happy, and not just in the bedroom. He did not want her to be like so many other women of her class, married and miserable. Especially if that unhappiness drove her into the arms of another man, as had been the case for his mistresses.

Until he had met Amelia, the fate of many aristocratic women was not something about which he had given much consideration. To his shame, all he had thought of was how those marriages had benefitted him, when those unhappy women fled to his bed. But it was wrong. And especially wrong for Amelia. Like so many other women of her class, she was being forced into this marriage by her father and by Society.
