Chapter 36

THE TOWN

The patrols were absolutely ridiculous. Just Marley or Caroline interrogating people on the trails or older folks who hated all the tourists. And hated anyone not white.

She could have aligned with them. Shown them that they were ultimately on the same side. But she didn’t. Because some of the folks patrolling were on her list. And she didn’t want this place to be filled with armed racists. They’d caught her eye, her attention. And now she had to watch them. And eventually, kill them. It wasn’t that she wanted to do this (fine, she did), but she had to. This was the only way to make this place whole again.

She herself had been questioned twice by some senior citizens. Her! As if she didn’t belong here. She was here. She was Sedona. The damn fools.

“Excuse me? Excuse me! Miss? Who are you?” Another old couple was in her face. They weren’t even part of the community. They didn’t do anything to heal this place; they merely bought up land because it was hot and beautiful and the dry air (in winter) was easy on their arthritis. Every fall they came, and come spring they’d leave. Just like birds flying south. But they were greedy, obnoxious, and rude, not at all like birds. She glared at them.

“Get the fuck out of my way,” she snarled.

The woman’s jaw dropped as she said it. Good. Be shocked. Fucking snowbirds were as bad as everyone else here. If she had her way, there would be no more part-time living here. All or nothing.

She was getting impatient. Sure, she could take out a patroller or whatever they called themselves. But that was no fun. No, she’d have to move up her targets. Keep things rolling.

She was staring at her next person right now. It was easy when they drank. You could always wrangle a drunk person. Especially the day drinkers.

It was barely evening out; the sun was still bright and blindingly hot. But serendipity struck now and then. A target. A name she wanted. But it wasn’t this one’s time yet. Unless . . .

She could grab her, and no one would know. She was close enough to her hair to touch it. One quick hit and she’d be down. Do it, take her. Kill her. Cleanse the world.

“Excuse me! Who are you? What are you doing here?”

Dammit! The patrollers were everywhere. And for now, it looked like they were succeeding at keeping murders at bay.
