Lady Sekhmet returned to her summer compound, waiting for word from Orion. She had not been able to finish speaking with Aurora, as the queen was napping again. The queen had been doing that a lot lately, Sekhmet noted.
Orion strode into the main hall, where his lady was prepping flowers to hang and dry for spells.
âMy lady,â Orion said with a bow.
âI take it there were no complications,â Sekhmet said, as more of a confirmation than a question.
âThe old woman has been disposed of, and the message was received by the human man and woman. I witnessed them reading it together.â Orionâs tone was flat; he braced for her to ask him for details, knowing he would have to tell her about the old womanâs words.
âAnything else?â
âThe woman had a message for you before her death.â
Sekhmet chuckled, never taking herself away from the task at hand. âA message for me? Oh, this should be interesting. Please enlighten me.â
Orion straightened. âThe woman referred to her gift as unpredictable, but strong. Then she said the following, my lady: The crown that sparkles and shines upon your head will soon feel like lead. A new line has begun, will never be undone. Your demise will come from a twisted prize: the one who carries the legacy of her motherâs pain, licked by the flames, will come for the queen. Wait andââ
Sekhmetâs expression changed from amusement to fury, the flowers shrinking and wilting in her hand. âAnd what? Orion, and?â
âThat was all she said, my lady.â
Sekhmet set her flowers down. âLook what you made me do to my beautiful babies!â With a wave of her wrist, the peonies went from withering limp carcasses to spring blooms. Sekhmet squared her shoulders, teeth gritted. âNow what do you mean, that was all she said? She could not finish her statement or would not?â Her gaze zeroed in on her most trusted guard.
âI killed her before she finished her statement,â he said coolly.
Lady Sekhmetâs eyebrows rose for a moment. With a subtle flick of her wrist, vines shot out from the wall, wrapping around Orionâs entire body and tethering him there. To his credit, he did not struggle. Sekhmet made a fist, and the vines tightened.
âI deserve your anger,â he said.
âYes, you do. You let your emotions control you, and I lost important information that I could have used. Your emotions do not come before logic! That is the Vila oath, is it not?â
âYou are correct. Emotions do not control the Vila. Loyalty to the Lady of the House of Hathor before oneself. Always, my lady. Cleanse me of my mistake,â he begged in a controlled whisper.
Sekhmet released the tension in her hands, the vines retracted, and Orion dropped to the floor. âYou have learned your lesson,â she said, regaining her composure. âLet us dissect the old womanâs message and extrapolate what we can, because it sounds like we will have to keep an eye on this infant and what happens to her. It also implies this child is linked to who is going to be our next queen.
