Sixteen

Angie is, of course, disappointed not to meet Perry. Although she does later admit that she’s quite pleased to have me all to herself.

We have the same kind of weekend together we’ve been having for years. It’s as though nothing has changed but the reality is that everything has changed.

She’s brought her yang stone and remembers to get it out of her bag this time and I hunt around for my yin.

‘Here it is.’ I pull it from the back of the drawer and place it down on the kitchen island next to hers.

‘I don’t know what happened to my googly eye,’ she says, with a laugh as she shakes my stone to make the eye move.

‘I don’t know how mine has stayed on.’

‘What shall we do with them?’

‘Don’t know,’ I say, with a shrug. ‘Have you an idea?’ Truth is I haven’t even thought about it and my phone rings before I can even try now. ‘Ah, need to take this, it’s Perry.’ I rush off into our bedroom.

‘How is he?’ Angie asks when I come back. ‘How’s his mum.’

I shake my head. ‘Really not looking good for his mum. You can imagine how devastated he is.’

‘Poor Perry. Poor Perry’s mum.’ She sounds glib, almost uncaring. But what can anyone really say? I sounded the same when I was speaking to Perry just minutes ago. It’s a shit situation.

Angie picks up the stones and scrutinises them. ‘Did you know that we have these round the wrong way?’

‘No? What do you mean?’

‘Yin is black but feminine. Yang is white but male. You have the girly one,’ she teases.

‘And you have the butch one, sounds about right.’

She hurls the stones at me and I, rather deftly, catch them, one in each hand. ‘I might keep them both.’

‘No, give me back my yang. Actually, we do have them the right way round, I have you and you have me.’ She snatches yang and clutches it to her chest. ‘Although I’ve been replaced now.’

‘You should be pleased for me. You wanted me to find a boyfriend.’

‘Yeah, I did. Just not a fiancé yet.’

There’s nothing I can say to that.
