Big Earl spread his hands. âTell me what you need.â
The tension knotting Patâs gut began to unravel. Just like that, no questions asked, his old friend was willing to help, as would all his fellow firefighters be. And the fact that Jack Moretta was there eased his anxiety even further. Jack was a friend, one whoâd do anything he could and then go beyond, one he fully trusted. âFor starters, I need to charge our phones, and I need to get ahold of Gabe.â
âI can do that.â Big Earl stood and walked out of the room.
When Pat turned to Rachel, she frowned. âDo you think we did the right thing coming here?â
Did he? He wasnât sure, couldnât ever know a hundred percent if heâd made the right choice. He lifted his hands, let them fall. âI donât know. All I know is this is where I felt most compelled to come.â
She nodded and lowered her gaze.
âWhat?â
âI just hope we donât end up bringing trouble to your friends.â
âMe too. But I donât know what else to do, where to turn.â He swiveled in his chair to face her fully, gripped her trembling hands in his. âJane needs help, Rachel. We canât trust the police just yet because of Benâs involvement, and Iâm at a loss.â
âYouâre right. I know that in my heart.â
âBut?â
âI guess I just got too used to handling things on my own.â
âNo one can go through life without depending on others.â Something heâd forgotten and would do well to remember.
She frowned at him, shook her head. âHow do you do that?â
âDo what?â
âTrust so easily.â
Pat reluctantly released her hands. âI donât. Believe me, trusting the people here didnât come easy. It came after years of getting to know most of them, some since childhood. It came after working beside them, risking my life for them and knowing with complete certainty that theyâd risk theirs for me as well. No, trust never comes easy. Not for me, anyway.â
âNo, me neither. But Iââ
âPat.â Jack strode across the room and opened his arms in welcome. âHowâs everything?â
âIâm doing okay.â Pat stood and hugged him, then stepped back. âAnd how are you and Ava doing?â
âEverythingâs good.â He grinned and petted Shadow. âLots of wedding plans.â
âAnd Mischief?â Even the thought of the adorable little girl brought warmth to Patâs heart.
âEarning her nickname, thatâs for sure.â Jack laughed, but then sobered quickly. âBig Earl told me youâre in trouble. He went to hunt up a couple of chargers from the office, but heâll be right in.â
âThanks.â He introduced Rachel, and Jack greeted her with a welcoming hug.
Then he held out a cell phone to Pat. âIn the meantime, you can use my phone to give Gabe a call. Then why donât you sit, and weâll eat while you tell us whatâs going on?â
Grateful for the help without wasting time with a million questions, Pat took the phone. âSure thing, Jack. Thanks.â
âAnytime. Iâll be back in a few.â
âJackâs a good guy, Rachel. Try to relax for a few minutes, take advantage of the moment of peace.
