Grant waited on the steps to his apartment for Sebastian. Time ticked by, but still Sebastian didnât show. Had he changed his mind? Wouldnât be a surprise. It wasnât like Grant had been the best company that night. He wouldnât blame Sebastian one bit if heâd thought better of it and bailed.
Heâd about given up when headlights turned into his complex. Grant stood and waited, feeling that little flip in his chest that was becoming all too familiar every time he saw Sebastian.
Sebastian parked and trudged up the steps with a paper bag tucked against his side. When he got even with Grant on the steps, he rubbed his thumb across the crease between Grantâs brows.
âWhatâs the matter? Did you think I ditched you?â
âOf course not.â Grant climbed the stairs before Sebastian read the lie on his face.
âWait.â At the door, Sebastian stopped him with a hand on his arm. Grant turned to him. âYou thought I wouldnât come when I said I would?â
âI wouldnât have blamed you if you hadnât.â
Sebastian fisted his free hand in Grantâs hair, the light bite of pain getting his attention before Sebastianâs lips fell on his. Just a brush, and a hint of what theyâd shared before. âI wanted to be here. I wouldnât have come otherwise. Okay?â
âYeah. Sure. Whatever.â
Again, that lick of pain at the back of his head. âI mean it.â
Reaching up, Grant took Sebastianâs hand and led him into the apartment where they collapsed on the couch. Only the kitchen light was on from when heâd left that morning. Sebastian dropped the bag on the coffee table and pulled out a couple of beers. He twisted off the top on one and handed it to Grant before opening his own.
âTrying to get me drunk?â
âItâs not the answer,â Sebastian allowed, âbut it can be an answer. Drink up.â
Grant didnât feel like talking, and Sebastian seemed content to let him be. Somewhere near the bottom of his third beer, Grant said, âStay the night?â
âThat sounds good.â Sebastian stood and held out his hand.
âNow?â
âItâs late. We both have an early day.â
They abandoned their empties on the coffee table for the night, and Grant allowed Sebastian to drag him into the bedroom. With care, Sebastian helped Grant undress.
When Sebastian had stripped him down to his underwear, Grant said, âThose, too.â
âWe donât have to do anything.â
âWhat if I wanna?â The petulance in his voice couldnât be helped after downing three beers in the time it had taken Sebastian to drink part of one.
âIâm not sure youâre in any shape toââ
âIâm buzzed, but itâs not like Iâm too far gone to give consent.â
âIâm not so sure about that.â
Because the room swayed, Grant plopped on the bed and watched Sebastian strip. Maybe the beer had gone to his head more than heâd thought. Not enough to not want Sebastian, just enough to push the maudlin thoughts to the back of his mind. They could be paralyzing if Grant allowed it, and he thanked whatever gods that be that Sebastianâa very naked, very aroused, Sebastianâwas there to take his mind off his failures.
